The Baumschlager & Eberle architecture studio was founded in Lochau (Austria) in 1984 by the architects Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle. Although almost all of the practiceûs work to date has been built in the region of Vorarlberg in Austria, in the space of only a few years this pair of Austrian architects have achieved very considerable international recognition. With a body of work that is pragmatic in its concepts and closely focused in its details, construction systems and materials, Baumschlager & Eberle have demostrated an exceptional capacity for combining good architecture with excellent business relations with constructors and developers, in such a traditionally problematic area as that of housing. If their buildings are difficult to categorize in terms of current trends in architecture, it is nonetheless easy to find points of correspondence between their own projects. Each of their schemes is grounded in some previous work, in a process of constant evolution that is based on alternating between taking full advantage of tried and tested results and experimenting with new proposals, both in architectural typologies and in construction techniques and materials.
